SCIENCE AND EDUCATION IN RUSSIA

Russia is the motherland of many famous scientists, discoverers and inventors who have made a significant contribution to world science. Soviet and Russian science has given the world discoveries, many of which belongs to the Nobel Laureates: Lev Landau, Pyotr Kapitsa, Zhores Alferov, Konstantin Novoselov and other Russian scientists.

Academy of Sciences

XVIII century has become an important milestone in the history of Russian science. On 28 January 1724, the Emperor Peter the Great issued a decree establishing the Academy of Sciences in Saint-Petersburg. Peter the Great clearly understood the importance of science, education and culture in prosperity of the Country. After the foundation of the Academy of Sciences, scientists enjoyed the freedom of scientific creativity and actively published scientific works. Moreover, from the very beginning of its activity, the Academy of Sciences has become an honorable institution among the largest scientific institutions of Europe. In the XX century, the Academy of Sciences moved to Moscow and played a decisive role in the development of high-quality Russian education, actively contributing to the creation of a system of Universities and higher education institutions, as well as the training of scientific personnel.

There are now more than 1,000 Higher Education Institutions in Russia. 20 Nobel Laureates and more than 10 leaders of a number of countries are alumni of Universities in Russia and the Soviet Union. Russian education is valued abroad. There are 229,000 students from 160 countries studying in Russia. Russian education has long been famous for its quality both in Russia and abroad.

Nowadays, science in Russia is one of the key national priorities. The year 2021 has been declared the Year of Science and Technology in Russia, the main focus of which is to attract talented young people to science and acquaint with the scientific achievements of Russian scientists

Russian students won gold at the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics (2021)

EJOI 2021 (European Junior Olympiad in Informatics) brought together 107 official participants from 30 countries, as well as 64 non-competitive participants. The Russian team was the only one that has won four gold medals in the main program, as well as one gold and three silver medals in the non-competitive one. The competition was hosted by the Romanian city of Ploiesti. As last year, due to the difficult epidemiological situation, schoolchildren took part in the Olympiad remotely from their countries.

Russian schoolchildren have won five gold medals at IPhO 2021 (International Physics Olympiad) (2021)

Thus, the participants set the record of last year. More than 450 schoolchildren from 90 countries took part in the Olympiad. Russia was represented by five young Muscovites. Before that, the guys together with others set an absolute record at the Asian Physics Olympiad, winning all eight gold medals for the first time in the history of the Olympiad.

At the 32nd International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2021), the Russian team won medals (2021)

304 schoolchildren from 76 countries took part in the Olympiad. In 2021, the Olympiad was hosted online by Portugal. Young Russians under the guidance of teachers and staff of the MSU Faculty of Biology have won two gold and two silver medals.

The 17th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo 2021) has been won by Russian schoolchildren (2021)

180 schoolchildren from 46 countries took part in the 17th International Geography Olympiad. The Russian team, formed from schoolchildren who had won the All-Russian Geography Olympiad, won two gold and two silver medals became the absolute winner in the number of points.

 

Young Russians won four gold medals at the 53rd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2021)

The Olympiad, in which 79 countries participated, was hosted remotely by Tokyo. Four children from Russia received the highest awards. The system for training the team for participation in the International Chemistry Olympiads was developed at the MSU Chemistry Department.

Young Russians won the 13th International Olympiad Romanian Master of Mathematics (2021)

135 people from 22 countries took part in the Olympiad. Representatives of Russia have won two gold and two silver medals. Overall, the Russian team shared the first place with the Chinese team. The Olympiad has been hosted annually by Romania since 2008.
